Purple Things and Angel’s Wings

for-maddie

Today the blogosphere, the internetz, the city of LA and countless cities around the country and the world will turn purple. All in honor and remembrance of one brilliant, passionate, bright eyed, lash fluttering, giggling little girl.

Madeline Alice Spohr.

Maddie.

There will be purple toes, purple shirts, purple bracelets, purple blogs, purple twitter pages and more.
All for the love of one little girl. One of our own.
As parents, friends, writers, bloggers, sharers of our lives, we embrace, we love, we all feel the loss of Maddie.
Her death rocked the blogosphere and beyond and we, we rocked right back.
Through our tears and pain, we raised money for other children in Maddie’s name.
Through the haze of disbelief and shock, we raised money to help her parents with the unthinkable task of burying their only child, their 17 month old daughter.
Some have shared their own experiences, one flew there and stands by their side, laughing crying and helping, proving once again that she herself is a very special angel, others sent out the rally cry that organized walks around the country in Maddie’s honor, she designed memory bracelets and donated all proceeds to Heather and Mike and the list goes on….

On this day I will be taking my daughter and together, in our purple shirts and purple eyeshadow, we will get purple toes and fingernails, a Maddie-cure (stealing Casey’s phrase), we will pick some purple flowers and have a picnic outside surrounded by bubbles and nature. We will look at the sky, say a prayer, be thankful for our time together and know that somewhere up there.. one of God’s most precious little Angels is flitting around, testing out her new purple wings and smiling down on us, watching the world change and become a better place because of her.
Because of Maddie, over $24,000 was raised for March of Dimes in less than 3 days.
Because of Maddie, thousands of parents hugged their children a little tighter, played a little longer and counted their blessings a bit more closely.
Because of Maddie, the world is and always will be, a better place.

Turn on your purple and give praise and celebrate today the little girl whose life is changing the world.

Potato Casserole with SunDried Tomato & Basil Cream Cheese

potato-casserole

This potato casserole was a last minute creation and switch from the original potato dish. What happened you ask? I received two amazing things in the mail.
Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese in Spinach and Artichoke flavor (oh my holy tonguegasmic delight on triscuits, that’s all I’m sayin’) and their Sundried Tomato & Basil flavor.

The sundried tomato and basil got me thinking about mashed potatoes and how good that would be but, I didn’t think mashed potatoes would be quite up to the task of our Ham and Deep Fried Turkey and Southern Green Beans cooked all day with bacon, garlic and onions… so I came up with this Potato Casserole and it might have been THE most popular thing on the table.

Potato Casserole with SunDried Tomato and Basil Cream Cheese
(This made enough for a 10X13 casserole dish)

  • 4 lbs red potatoes
  • 2 C green onions, chopped
  • 3/4 C SunDried Tomato & Basil Cream Cheese, divided (1/4 C and 1/2 C)
  • 2 1/2 C Light Sour Cream
  • 2 C Sharp Cheddar Cheese, grated
  • 3 to 4 C Lay’s Potato Chips, crushed
  • 2 Tbsp pepper
  • **

  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter, divided and cut into chunks
  1. Boil the potatoes until tender, drain and set aside. Cut into chunks when cool enough to work with.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt 1/2 stick of butter and 1/4 C SunDried Tomato & Basil Cream Cheese, add in green onions and stir fry briefly.
  3. In a large bowl combine chopped potatoes and all other ingredients, except potato chips.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Spread into a 10X13 glass baking dish, top with crushed potato chips. Cover with tinfoil and cook at 350 for 20 minutes, remove tinfoil and cook another 5 to 10 minutes until the chips begin to ‘golden’ up.
  6. Serve immediately.*

*if you want to re-heat this in the microwave, scoop the chips off, heat and then top with more chips.
** Carissa said “That’s a LOT of pepper”; she’s right. But, with the cream cheese, butter and sour cream, it can stand that much pepper. If you’re a bit squeamish to add that much pepper, just do 1 Tbsp and the you can add more after cooking.

If You Give A 5 Year Old A Barbie Fishing Pole

If you give a 5 Year Old a pink barbie fishing pole and send her out on a boat in the middle of the bay

She might catch 15 fish on that pink barbie fishing pole

Her brother might get so bored that he covers up and goes to sleep, while she fishes with her pink barbie fishing pole

If you give a 5 year old a pink barbie fishing pole, she might catch a 21-inch red fish on that pink barbie fishing pole completely shaming any fish that her mom and dad might have caught on their big adult sized fishing poles, even though mom’s is pink, too.

If you give a 5 year old a pink barbie fishing pole, she might catch so many fish that by the end of the day she might tell her parents that she is tired of catching so many fish and wants to stop.

That same 5 year old might punk her daddy the next time he goes fishing and catches no fish, that he would have caught some fish if he’d taken her and she had worn her Queen of The Lake hat and used her pink barbie fishing pole
