Between The Lions

or interpretation is everything..

Thanks to Chick-Fil-A, the kids got two Between The Lions CD’s the other day.  They begged me to put them on in the car, so I did.

As soon as the theme song started, Princess started singing and Monkey, not knowing the words, but no less enthusiastic started bopping along in his booster seat.

We listened to the first story on the CD and we talked about it (thank you for awesome car conversations, Chick-fil-A).

Suddenly, Princess perks up. ”

Mom, Why is it called Between The Lions?”

Okay, take 1: Easy Answer

“Well honey, the main characters are Lions and it’s about them”

I tell you what, you can HEAR the gears churning in that blonde head.

“But then why do they sing… ‘Between the Lions Between The Covers of A Book’ aren’t Lions in jungles and zoos?”

Oh for the love of literal children… *sigh*

Take 2.. more complicated answer

“Well sweetie, when you read books (and in life) there is a saying ‘read between the lines’ it means to read and see more than just what’s written, you should use your imagination and see more than just the written word”

Dead silence back there.

and then.

“So there is more to a book than just what’s written and that’s why the call the show Between The Lions… it’s one of those punks you were telling me about..”

???PUNKS!??

imagine a lightbulb going off over my head

“You mean a PUN?”

Princess: “Oh (giggle) yes ma’am, a pun”

Me: “well, yes honey, kind of.  It’s also known as a play on words.. Lions.. Lines…”

Princess: “Okay”

Change the setting to us pulling into the driveway.  Monkey VAULTS out of the car and charges through the front door and into his room, he rips a book off his bookshelf and opens it; throws it on the floor and pulls out another one. rinse and repeat 3 or 4 more times.

He then STOMPS his booted feet out into the living room, looks at me accusingly and in his most disappointed and peevish 3 year old voice says: “Mom, there are NO LIONS in my books!!!”

*le sigh*

Happy Birthday, Nathan.

Happy Birthday, Nathan.

Birthdays are so special; they’re a day to rejoice and give thanks and a day to remember.

Your mom was so proud of you; I know that she’s watching you right now and that she’s smiling because you are more than any mother could hope for.  I say that both as your wife, and as a mom.

I am so grateful for all that you are.

Why you saw me and decided you had to have me, I’ll never know but I am damn thankful for that.
You saved me from myself.
You constantly tell me that you wish I could see myself through your eyes because I’d be amazed; while I may not be able to see myself through your eyes, I see the love and the passion and the strength of your love in your eyes when you look at me and it still has the power to weaken my knees.

I remember it all.  The moment we met, the swimming pool, the phone calls, the apologies, the drives, the surprise roses, the green cast on my wrist when you proposed during finals.

Everything.

You captured my heart and healed it.  Thank you.

Every one of my accomplishments, is because you stand beside me cheering me on, supporting me and encouraging me.
You have given me a life full of blessings and love and compassion and beauty, and I am blessed.

Your compassion for others humbles me.
Your love and passion for our children brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.
The fire in your eyes when you look at me makes me all melty and tingly.
When you say I love you and kiss me, the outside world ceases to exist.

You are my husband, my best friend, my lover, my partner, my strength.

I love you more today than yesterday and tomorrow, I’ll love you even more.

The power of what we have and the strength of my feelings for you weakens me and brings tears to my eyes, yet fills me with peace and strength.

I can be having the worst day ever, and all it takes is your voice, your touch and I’m soothed.

Happy Birthday, Nathan.  I love you so much more than my 19 year old self could ever have imagined possible.

Then, Now and Always

Your loving wife,

Rachel

How To Roast Peppers

A couple of weeks ago I posted this Roasted Green Chilies Stew recipe.

You could say that today’s Mouthwatering Monday is a follow up to that.

This is a step by step How to Roast Peppers Mouthwatering Monday.

Roasting peppers is crazy easy and the smell in your house, y’all will not believe it.  Your house is going to smell AMAZING!!!!

these are anaheim and poblano

1.  Wash your peppers and place them on a foil lined (ignore the lack of foil) baking sheet and place them in your oven on broil for about 6 to 10 minutes (or until blistering and well roasted and blackened) per side.  (unless you’re lucky enough to have a gas stove and then you, you lucky duck.. can roast them and blister and blacken them over your awesome flame) If the weather allows, you can also roast your peppers on your outdoor grill.

2.  Remove them from the oven or flame and place them in a zip-lock bag and allow them to “sweat” for about 15 minutes

3.  Remove the peppers from the bag.

4.  Put a small slit in the skin, slide your finger under the skin and it will just peel away from the pepper.  Discard the skin and add the roasted pepper yumminess to your favorite recipe ;-)

If you’re adding your recipe to Mouthwatering Monday, Thank you!  I love seeing the recipes and finding new food lovers’ blogs!!
