Dark Chocolate Cake with Kahlua Glaze
Oh yes, you read that correctly.
Dark, Rich, Deep, Fudgey Chocolate Bundt Cake topped with a deliciously decadent and simple Kahlua Glaze.
Dark Chocolate Cake with Kahlua Glaze
When this month’s Crazy Cooking Challenge was announced as the search for the ULTIMATE Chocolate Cake recipe, I immediately did 2 things: 1) Groaned (remember? 17 Day Diet) 2) jumped on the internet and started searching.
I am a complete and total chocolate snob and any old chocolate cake just doesn’t get my taste buds dancing – up to this point in life, the only two chocolate cakes that have earned my love and passion are the German Chocolate Cake and Texas Sheet Cake.
It took me a couple of days to find a cake recipe that got me excited. I don’t know WHY I didn’t immediately go to Bree’s blog ~ she is after all, fairly amazing and I’m so excited to meet her and be a Food Community Leader with her in a few weeks at Blissdom.
I was immediately drawn to this recipe by the combination of chocolate and Kahlua – I have fond memories of late nights on my apartment patio with my roommate (and ADPi pledge class sorority sister <> Nicole) that involve Kahlua and cream and laughing until we cried. I honestly couldn’t tell y’all the last time that I had Kahlua – so off I went to the liquor store and then the grocery store for cake mix and pudding (yes, cake mix – deal with it)
The only changes that I made to Bree’s Recipe were to use Dark Chocolate Fudge cake mix, Dark Chocolate Chips, and a Fudge Pudding (why yes, I am a Dark Chocolate lover, why do you ask?)
I made this cake for Nathan’s birthday party (along with non-alcoholic cupcakes for the kids) and I would have taken beautiful pictures of a slice of cake accompanied by the Kahlua bottle and some dark chocolate chips – if the cake hadn’t been positively inhaled and devoured. There were actual, honest-to-goodness moans of delight from everyone who tasted the cake.
Wickedly – sinfully – amazingly delicious, that is what this cake is.
Dark Chocolate Cake with Kahlua GlazePrint Recipe
- 1 18.25 oz box Dark Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix without pudding in the mix
- 1 3.9 oz box Chocolate Fudge Pudding Mix
- 2 C Sour Cream
- 4 large eggs
- 3/4 C vegetable oil
- 1/3 C Kahlua
- 1/2 bag or 6 oz dark chocolate chips
- 1 C powdered sugar
- 3 Tbsp to 1/4 C Kahlua
- Preheat oven to 350° F
- Spray a bundt pan with baking spray - or grease and coat with cocoa powder to prevent sticking
- In a large mixing bowl combine: Cake Mix, pudding, sour cream, eggs, vegetable oil and Kahlua.
- Mix well
- Using a spatula or wooden spoon - fold in the chocolate chips
- Pour the batter into your prepared bundt pan
- Bake for roughly 1 hour; when I checked my cake at 50 minutes - it was done
- Cool in the bundt pan for about 10 minutes, turn the cake out onto a wire cooling rack and allow to cool completely.
- Once the cake is completely cooled, start the glaze.
- Combine the Kahlua and powdered sugar and whisk until smooth - more powdered sugar will give you a thicker consistency - a hint of cinnamon will add an additional depth to the cake
- Pour the glaze over the cake and enjoy
Be prepared for offerings of love and servitude for another slice 🙂
I cannot wait to meet you too! I am so glad that you liked this cake so much, it is one of my favorites too.
I’m so glad I found it! As are all the people who enjoyed it at Nathan’s birthday party! Now – to figure out how to make my glaze as beautiful as yours 🙂 😉 Cannot WAIT to work with you and meet you! 🙂
Does this cake need to be stored in the fridge? Sounds delicious ❤️
No ma’am! You could, but it’s never lasted more than a day or two here, and I just keep it in a cake carrier tightly sealed
OH YUM! I love dark chocolate and Kahlua! Looks seriously delicious!

Wow, your little mytsery man really did grow! And congrats on the due date? I don’t know how to go about that, haha. One of my sister’s friends has that birthday, and not to mention it is the day when students return to Hogwarts (random). Your little boy is very special indeed 😉 And if I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m so happy for you and your husband 🙂
I’m sorry that this was devoured at Nathan’s birthday party otherwise I’d be begging for a slice:)
My recipe started with a cake mix too, and it was delicious! This looks so good, and the glaze? Wow! Yummy!
Uhm, can someone make a low carb version or send me a magic wand to make them go away. These look amazing!
Chocolate and Kahlua, omg! I was a Kahlua and Cream girl myself, back in those days. I do still have a bottle in the cabinet, it’s dusty, but I’ll bet it’s still good! Can’t wait to try this one!

Mmm…chocolate…I am a fan of chocolate…
Easy and Simple recipe! What can I ask for but a plate of that scrumptious delight! Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe! Have a happy evening!
I’m sure this is a silly question but do you prepare the pudding and then add it to the mix or do you just add the packet?
Not silly at all! I re-read my directions and it says pudding (not just pudding MIX) which could be confusing!!! It’s the pudding mix, you don’t prepare the pudding! 🙂 Thank you for your question and comment! There are NO silly questions here! 🙂
Well, it is 5 years after the last post. I visited 4 grocery stores and not one of them has a boxed pudding cake mix. So, having to use just 2 dark fudge cake mixes. Should be okay I hope. Sad to see the pudding cake mixes gone!
oh my gosh! I can’t believe they’ve gotten rid of the cake mixes with the pudding in them 🙁 I’m sure that the dark fudge cake mixes will be wonderful, too! Please come back and let me know how it is, and I’ll remake and update the post, too! Happy Holidays! Hope you enjoy it!!
Ha! Well, once I got started and reread the ingredents , it said a box of pudding! I wasnt quite sure if this recipe would work ,but sounded so good. I have an extremely difficult bundt pan. It’s called Holiday Trees Bundt. There are 7 trees that stick up, but look like mountains. Getting the cake to come out of the pan is tricky! I only had 1 tree come out of the pan. The cake is very moist and it has to be a really dense cake. But, I am use to salvaging it and got the trees out! Wish I could show you a photo of how pretty it is. About to put the glaze on. We will eat it Christmas Day! Thanks for responding!????
Oh yes! I read the comment wrong then, too! There was a cake mix with pudding AND pudding! 🙂 I hope y’all enjoy it and thank you for coming back to share! 🙂 Happy Holidays!
