Texas Hot Tea Toddy

Like any good southern girl, I’ve had my share of hot toddys. A hot toddy is one of the original ‘cures’ for sore throats, coughs, and colds in the south; every Granny, including my own, had their particular recipe usually involving hot water, whisky, lemon, and honey in a mason jar, or coffee mug.
I have fond memories of hot, strong, soothing hot toddy’s helping to easy my sore throats and coughs, and my Granny’s cool hand on my forehead followed by a kiss; so when Maker’s Mark sent me a basket of goodies featuring their signature red dipped bottle, some adorable little cups, and some yummy Harney and Sons Teas to play around with and make my own twist on a hot tea toddy, I couldn’t wait to get started!
The first thing I did was make a traditional hot toddy, with a tea twist using the winter white earl grey tea, 2 oz Maker’s Mark Whisky, a dash of lemon, and a squeeze of honey… YUM.
It was so good, and it reminded me of cozy nights on the couch, family, and comfort.
I love a spicy twist on all things, so it’s no surprise that I immediately turned towards jalapeños for my Texas Hot-Tea Toddy twist. (hot-tea… hotty toddy) get it?
I steeped the White Christmas tea bag in boiling water with a couple jalapeño slices that I’d muddled a little to release the juices, for 5 minutes, added 2 oz Maker’s Mark, and a drizzle of honey
ZING! oh my! It reminded me of the hot toddy’s of my past, only kicked up a notch!
So fun, y’all! If you’ve never made a hot toddy with tea and a twist, I can’t recommend it enough! It’s so delicious, and so fun.
Texas Hot Tea Toddy
- 2 ounces Maker's Mark Whisky
- 1 White Christmas Tea Bag
- 4 jalapeño slices
- hot water to fill
- 1 to 2 teaspoons honey
- Muddle 2 jalapeño slices in the bottom of your cup
- Add the tea bag and pour hot water to steep, leaving room for 2 ounces of whisky, steep for 5 minutes and remove tea bag
- Pour honey over this, and then add the whisky
- Stir lightly, garnish with jalapeño slices for flair
